about

this song actually started out being called "flowers for algernon," though i hadn't read the book yet. my friend had been telling me what it was about, and i had a rat living in my ceiling. that's about all the similarity i needed to go with it. when we got to the studio we decided that the name wasn't really that enticing and we should go with something a little more, eh, relevant. the person i wrote this about only got one real song from me, and i guess it's gratitude and apology and love and regret and fear and acceptance and awe all rolled into one, as much of life and love can be.

lyrics

i never asked you to forgive me
but i know you do
you never asked me to explain it
i didn't have to

is there something i should know
before i leave here
is there anything that i should take along
because the road outside is paved
with good intentions
and the road to home is patient
and it's long

i never asked you to believe me
but i know you did
you never asked me to protect you
and you were bruised because of it

is there something i could say
to make things different
'cause there's nothing i can say
to make it right
but i swear you are as beautiful as ever
as i'm leaving here tonight

so here's to choices that we had to make
my feet are aching from the cautious steps
i swore i'd take
and i'm dying for one word of truth
don't feel you're open yet
but i can see you're trying to
get through

i never asked you to forgive me
but i know you do
