about

This was part of a weekly song challenge from last summer I did with my friend Daisy O'Connor (www.daisyoconnor.com). They always came at the last minute (who was it that said the greatest invention was the deadline??), so I grabbed the title line, which had been laying around unused for years, and incorporated my new joys of life in Texas. "Growing carrots and swiss chard/and chicks in the backyard....." We're pretty sure one of us accidentally sold our soul to the devil for our chard crop, but it was worth it. And chickens? Can no longer imagine life without them.

lyrics

everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry

dust on the grey cars
there’s more of it on ours
we don’t have to know flowers
by name

growing carrots and swiss chard
our chicks in the backyard
we play and we play hard

‘cause everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry

we stand in the tall grass
it grows and it grows fast
summer will not last
the fall

so take off my silk dress
in the heat it’s a hot mess
it seems like we’re scared less

but everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry
everybody’s in a big damn hurry

cracks in the pavement
the years they were well spent
and it’s all that the time meant

dust on the grey cars
there's more of it on ours
we don't have to know flowers
by name

about

Shawnee Kilgore Austin, Texas

"Shawnee Kilgore is to music as velvet gloves are to diamond cutters,” wrote James Hardesty, owner of the Green Frog Acoustic Tavern in Bellingham, WA. “She holds all this beauty in her hand, raw and untouched, then she chips away until it gleams in the light, holding on with a soft gentleness that she has perfected." ... more
